Tell Your Story of Working with a Disability in Sheffield

Nancy Fielder, editor at the Sheffield Telegraph claims in a recent article that “across the city, people with disabilities would love to have a job and work hard, shoulder responsibility and meet any challenge laid before them.At the same time, employers are crying out for motivated and reliable staff. ” Nancy, along with the Telegraph’s Business Editor David Walsh, recently launched a joint campaign by The Telegraph, Sheffield City Council and the Department for Work and Pensions to bring people with disabilities looking for work and prospective employers together.

“In a series of articles, we will tell the stories of willing workers and bosses who see people for what they can do, and not what they can’t – so get in touch if you can help!”

Speaking about employers Nancy explained that “those unfamiliar with disability might believe the adjustments, adaptation and costs are too much for a busy company, but there is plenty of help available – especially now – society has never had a better understanding of mental and physical disabilities and a host of organisations are ready to help.”

“We want to tell the story of disability in work in the modern world. Through our campaign we also aim to ease the anxiety of saying the wrong thing or being patronising or belittling to people with disabilities.” Perhaps most importantly, Fielder says “we want to show that disability is no barrier to employment.”

Do you have a disability and are currently in work? Do you employ someone with disability? If so the team at The Sheffield Telegraph want to hear from you. Email: david.walsh@jpress.co.uk or call 0114 252 1307 to tell Telegraph Business Editor David Walsh your story.

Disability Sheffield is a forward-thinking, energetic organisation doing a lot of positive work in Sheffield. I have no doubt they will continue to do so for a long time to come.

A fantastic presentation thought provoking and good questions from the floor around promoting this film/message to the general public not just professionals.

When I moved to Sheffield nearly five years ago it was my "go to" organisation. I expect it to stay that way. All the staff and volunteers seem to pull out little gems of effort that disabled people like me couldn't do without. Professionally and personally - I love em :)
