Justice For Hate Crime Victims Campaign

Justice For Hate Crime Victims Campaign

Hate crime against disabled people is often not seen as a serious matter and so victims of it are often left without the perpetrators facing a reckoning through the law.

But now Inclusion London has set up a new campaign called ‘Justice for Disabled Victims’.

They say: “Disabled people aren’t fully protected by UK hate crime laws. This means victims often don’t get justice. England, Wales, and Northern Ireland lack a single, clear law to deal with hate crime, making justice harder to find. Reports also show widespread bias against Disabled people in the police. At a time when hatred against all marginalised groups is on the rise, we want the law to give effective protection to all victims of hate crime.

Inclusion London have launched the Justice for Disabled Victims campaign to demand reform of hate crime law and better protections for disabled victims of hate crime. You can get involved by signing the petition and sharing with your networks.

There is also an online tool to help people write to their MP.

Locally-based organisation Sheffield Voices has also done work on combating hate crime against disabled people, such as the You’re Not My Mate project.

Disability Sheffield is a forward-thinking, energetic organisation doing a lot of positive work in Sheffield. I have no doubt they will continue to do so for a long time to come.

When I moved to Sheffield nearly five years ago it was my "go to" organisation. I expect it to stay that way. All the staff and volunteers seem to pull out little gems of effort that disabled people like me couldn't do without. Professionally and personally - I love em :)
