Extra Costs Commission Final Report Recommends Nimbus Access Card

Launched in July 2014, The Extra Costs Commission has spent the last year exploring the extra costs faced by disabled people and their families and has published its final report and Easy Read Summary).pdf . The Commission has considered evidence about the problem of extra costs and identified solutions for driving down these costs. The report outlines 16 recommendations targeted at four groups:

  • Disabled people and their families
  • Businesses
  • Disability organisations
  • Regulators and government

Nimbus, our partner in the Accessible Sheffield Partnership is featured in Recommendation 5 that ‘a disability organisation should set up an affiliate scheme for disabled people to attract discounts and deals’ for its organisational commitment to developing the Access Card.

Cllr Mazher Iqbal, Cabinet Member Public Health and Equality said “ The Council are pleased to be working in partnership with Disability Sheffield and Nimbus to support the Access Card as part of our Accessible Sheffield Project. Reducing the extra costs faced by disabled people and their families will help break down the barriers people experience when accessing community, civic life, shopping and leisure opportunities and also recognises the importance of disabled people to our city economy.

The Commission will reconvene in June 2016 to review progress made against its recommendations.

Disability Sheffield is a forward-thinking, energetic organisation doing a lot of positive work in Sheffield. I have no doubt they will continue to do so for a long time to come.

When I moved to Sheffield nearly five years ago it was my "go to" organisation. I expect it to stay that way. All the staff and volunteers seem to pull out little gems of effort that disabled people like me couldn't do without. Professionally and personally - I love em :)
