Consultation on Extending the legal 'Right to Have' a Personal Health Budget

The government has launched a consultation seeking views on extending the legal rights relating to personal budgets and integrated budgets.

The government says that within the NHS there is an ever-growing shift towards the personalisation of health care. Their evidence suggests that health outcomes are often improved leading to an increase in satisfaction when people have more choice and control over how their individual needs are met.

The government is specifically consulting on:

  • Extending the right to have a personal health budget to specific groups of people
  • Extending the right to have an integrated personal budget to specific groups of people
  • Whether individuals would welcome the opportunity to incorporate additional funding streams into integrated personal budgets

You can view the consultation and give your views by clicking here. The consultation closes on 8th June 2018.

I have grave concerns about the introduction of Personal Health Budgets.

I question the direction of, and the eventual outcome to which these could lead.

I believe these may be ‘sold ‘ (spun) to individuals which would allow them to think they have a greater control over their health and care. However these could then be introduced across the whole of society, leading to a government funded basic healthcare system from which additional healthcare can be purchased.

I would also question what happens if, when your personal budget is exhausted. You get sicker and die? You have to purchase and fund extra healthcare?

The whole system of healthcare in this country is becoming insidious. I worry for the future.

When I moved to Sheffield nearly five years ago it was my "go to" organisation. I expect it to stay that way. All the staff and volunteers seem to pull out little gems of effort that disabled people like me couldn't do without. Professionally and personally - I love em :)

Disability Sheffield is a forward-thinking, energetic organisation doing a lot of positive work in Sheffield. I have no doubt they will continue to do so for a long time to come.
