Pavement parking often presents major challenges for disabled people, especially for people with visual impairments , wheelchair users and people who use mobility aids, leading to calls to make it illegal. After years of campaigning the Government has set up a consultation on whether pavement parking should be banned and local authorities given more powers to challenge those who do so.The consultation closes on 22 November 2020.

The Commission On Social Security launched its 8 proposals to improve the benefits system on 12 August – with hundreds watching online. Now they are looking for more people to take part in their consultation about the proposals. The organisation was set up in May last year and all the commissioners are Experts By Experience, coming from claimant/user-led groups and Deaf and Disabled People’s Organisations.

Everyone knows current welfare benefits are failing, but what would be a better approach? The Commission on Social Security ,set up by welfare system users to suggest ways in which it can be improved, has issued an invitation to an online event to discuss their proposals on Wednesday August 12 from 7 to 8.30pm. All the Commissioners are Experts by Experience. This means they each have lived experience of the benefits system and come from a range of claimant/user-led groups and Deaf and Disabled People’s Organisations.

Wheels for Wellbeing is running its annual survey of disabled cyclists to find out about the latest needs and experiences of disabled people who cycle. The data they collect will be used to inform their ongoing policy and campaigning work, and will help to strengthen the voice of disabled cyclists in the UK.

Sheffield City Region has launched their Active Travel Map, an online tool for people from across South Yorkshire to share their experiences of walking and cycling in their area. They would particularly like to hear from disabled people, wheelchair users and people who have mobility aids.

People from across South Yorkshire, whether they use a bus or not, are being asked for their views on bus services which will be used to inform an independent review announced by Mayor of Sheffield City Region Dan Jarvis earlier this year. Respondents have until 27th September to complete the survey.

Air pollution contributes to 500 deaths a year in Sheffield, causing strokes, lung cancer and cardiovascular disease.Sheffield City Council is consulting on plans to reduce air pollution and would like your help to shape what these plans are through their Clean Air Zone Consultation, which aims to improve air quality in the city by 2021.

In June a number of Sheffield residents and representatives of disabled people’s organisations joined together with the Disability Hub and Disability Sheffield to discuss the difficulties they faced around social care.Because of the delay, including the release of the Government Green paper on long term funding for social care for those above retirement age, the Local Government Association (LGA) is taking a stand and seeking feedback via consultation on all adult social care.At the same time, we would be grateful if participants would please respond to our own consultation and help us identify more readily some of the issues facing disabled people and others here in Sheffield.
