DPAC asks "How is Coronovirus affecting you?"

Disabled People Against Cuts (DPAC) are aware that the disruption due to the Coronovirus pandemic is having a particularly adverse effect on disabled people. In order for DPAC to raise the alarm about some of these issues they’re asking what’s happening to you.

Coronavirus Advice For Disabled People

Disabled people – especially those who employ their own care staff – are being warned to take extra care as Coronavirus starts to spread in Britain.First and foremost please keep up to date with guidance from Public Health England about what to do if you have symptoms, and what the government is doing about the virus. Ministers have still been unable to answer key questions on how they plan to cope with the impact of coronavirus on social care. Disabled people’s user led organisations including Disability Rights UK are speaking up, asking for action and issuing information and guidance as the virus spreads.

Passenger Assistance Card For Supertram Users

Disabled passengers on Sheffield and Rotherham’s Supertram now have the option of downloading and printing cards that let staff know that they may require assistance and what sort of help is needed. The Passenger Assistance Cards contain a message saying ‘please be patient’ or include a selection of options such as stating that the user is deaf, has a visual impairment or has difficulty communicating or has hidden disabilities.

It's on the Record - a Fundraising Event for Sheffield DPAC

Please note that this event has been cancelled due to the Coronavirus. Sheffield Labour students are organising a fundraising event later this month to raise money for the Sheffield branch of Disabled People Against Cuts. It will take place at Dina, a grassroots arts and culture venue on Cambridge Street in the city centre, on Friday March 20, from 8-11pm. The event is free but a donation of £5 would be welcome. DPAC Sheffield has recently been behind the On The Record campaign to purchase equipment so that disabled people can tape their Personal Independence Payment interviews.

Research on Addiction to Video/Internet Games

The School of Psychology in the National University of Ireland, Galway are looking for adults with a diagnosis of Autism, aged 18+ to take part in their research survey. The project is examining addiction to gaming which they call’Gaming Disorder’in adults with and without Autism.The closing date for the survey is 23 March at midnight.

The NHS has released a new video to help people who are receiving or feel they may be entitled to personal health budgets. A personal health budget allows people to manage their healthcare and support such as treatments, equipment and personal care, in a way that suits them.

People with learning disabilities on the outskirts of Sheffield are invited to join and take part in a range of fun activities at Just Good Friends,a registered charity supporting adults with learning disabilities in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. They are looking for new members in the Dronfield area if you’d like to try something new.

Patient And Citizen Leaders Programme

The NHS Leadership Academy Yorkshire & Humber in collaboration with Altogether Better is running a 3-day programme for patient and citizen leaders. The purpose of this new programme is to provide a development opportunity for patients and citizens who want to make a difference and who are working with people and services across the NHS and wider health and care system. For example this might be within NHS Trusts, Clinical Commissioning Groups, universities, Strategic Partnership Groups or with organisations like Healthwatch. Participants will become part of a new patient/citizen leader network in the Yorkshire and the Humber region.
