Sheffield Voices Seen On Video

Our learning disability self-advocacy group Sheffield Voices has uploaded three videos which they’ve produced as a result of their events celebrating the International Day Of Disabled People earlier this month.

These include an interview with Simon Jarrett about his new book, Those They Called Idiots, which looks back in history at how people with learning disabilities were treated during the eighteenth century by the medical professions and what lessons we may learn from this.

There is also a video featuring Simon Duffy and Wendy Perez from the Centre For Welfare Reform talking about the seven keys to citizenship which they say will be needed to make society more accessible for everyone.

And last but not least is a public forum where people were invited to come along to talk about our Human Rights and hear about the work done by Sheffield Voices.

As part of Disability Sheffield, Sheffield Voices previously met at The Circle in Sheffield city centre but during the pandemic has been running sessions on Zoom, during which members talk about things that affect their lives and socialise. They also have a lot of fun. It is led by people who have learning disabilities themselves.

If you want to join the online meetings when they restart next year, please email kathryn.littlewood@disabilitysheffield.org.uk for details.

A fantastic presentation thought provoking and good questions from the floor around promoting this film/message to the general public not just professionals.

When I moved to Sheffield nearly five years ago it was my "go to" organisation. I expect it to stay that way. All the staff and volunteers seem to pull out little gems of effort that disabled people like me couldn't do without. Professionally and personally - I love em :)

Very good presentation, brave of the speakers to tell their stories and had a very high impact - feedback from Mate/Hate Crime presentation and video session at Safeguarding Working Together Conference

Disability Sheffield is a forward-thinking, energetic organisation doing a lot of positive work in Sheffield. I have no doubt they will continue to do so for a long time to come.
