People in Sheffield who are having a mental health crisis are now being told to ring a different phone number for urgent help.
The Community Mental Health Team (part of Sheffield Health And Social Care) which provides support to adults living in Sheffield who have complex or on-going mental health needs, has this week closed its single point of access team and launched a new urgent and crisis service . This is part of a bigger plan by the NHS to help people get aid quickly and easily.
Now anyone in Sheffield experiencing a mental health crisis can call 111 and select the mental health option to speak to a dedicated mental health call handler. You can
also call this number if someone you know is in crisis. This support is available for all ages, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It is free to call from a landline or mobile phone.” View poster
SHSC say: “NHS 111 mental health option provides direct access to a call handler with mental health training who can ensure you get help and means you do not need to get a referral from a GP. It can also support you or your loved ones to manage a mental health crisis. For some people it is an alternative to going to the emergency departments at the hospital or calling the police. Mental health call handlers will contact professionals directly to arrange a crisis assessment if required.
If you are already a Community Mental Health Team Patient please continue to contact your usual community mental health worker for your scheduled care and treatment on 0114 2716217 (North) and 0114 2716451 (South).”
