    The UK Government has hosted its first ever Global Disability Summit, with more than 700 people taking part. Those involved were asked to sign a Charter For Change to help improve disabled people’s rights worldwide.

    Are you currently employed as a Personal Assistant for an adult over the age of 18 and feel you could benefit from further training? Do you employ your own Personal Assistants and want to further their skills and knowledge, as well as your own? If so, Disability Sheffield are running a number of FREE courses for existing and aspiring Personal Assistants in partnership with Skills for Care and Sheffield City Council.

  • Free Lifewise event to safeguard older people from crime

    The Post Office, Fire Service and Police along with other partners will be offering advice and support on fraud and scams to the over 65’s at this community engagement event on Tuesday August 28th from 10.15am to 2.45pm at the Lifewise Centre in Hellaby, Rotherham.     In the biggest overhaul to the scheme in 40 years the government has announced that people with hidden disabilities, including autism and mental health conditions will be eligible to apply for a Blue Badge next year.

  • Call for better information on reasonable adjustments at work

    Nancy Doyle, CEO of Genius Within, argues that better information on adjustments in the workplace would mean that employers can proactively offer reasonable adjustments without having to wait for problems to arise and employees can ask for what they need before they are at crisis point.

  • Hydrocephalus Education Seminar

    Teaching professionals and members of the Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) service are invited to a seminar on Wednesday October 17th at the Sheffield offices of Irwin Mitchell, organised by national charity Shine, about the effects of hydrocephalus on children’s learning and behaviour. Places are limited so early booking is advised.

  • BSL Service for NHS 111 Calls

    British Sign Language users now have their own way of making urgent medical calls to the NHS 111 service. Using the webcam on a computer or the InterpreterNow app on a tablet or smartphone you can now make a video call to a BSL interpreter. The interpreter telephones an NHS 111 adviser and relays your conversation with them.

When I moved to Sheffield nearly five years ago it was my "go to" organisation. I expect it to stay that way. All the staff and volunteers seem to pull out little gems of effort that disabled people like me couldn't do without. Professionally and personally - I love em :)
