  • How to Become a Peer Supporter

Do you work with or support people with a learning disability, severe mental illness and/or autistic people?

Do you want to know how we can help them become more active?

We are supporting more and more services to set up a peer support scheme in their settings to help people who might be nervous or anxious about attending a group or activity.

    What is peer support?
It is usually someone who already does that activity regularly and has agreed to be a peer supporter. They will be paired with a newcomer who needs peer support. This means that they will be told to look out for the person, meet with them as they arrive at the activity, greet them, make them feel welcome, show them round and stay with them during the activity so that they have someone to be with and talk to. The support will be short term as part of the peer supporters role is to help the person integrate into the group.

How do I know which service is offering peer support?
Look out for the peer support logo (shown on the right) on service’s websites and / or social media pages. Peer Support Logo
If they don’t have the peer support logo, please get in touch with us and we will contact them to help set up peer support.

How do I find out about activities or groups my client can attend?
Contact us! We can put you in touch with organisations that deliver a range of healthy living and physical activities in Sheffield.

Disability Sheffield is a forward-thinking, energetic organisation doing a lot of positive work in Sheffield. I have no doubt they will continue to do so for a long time to come.

When I moved to Sheffield nearly five years ago it was my "go to" organisation. I expect it to stay that way. All the staff and volunteers seem to pull out little gems of effort that disabled people like me couldn't do without. Professionally and personally - I love em :)
