    As the year closes the Office for National Statistics has released a series of statistics called ‘Being Disabled In 2019’. There are seven subsets of data covering disabled people’s experiences of: Wellbeing, Employment, Loneliness, Education, Social Participation, Housing and Crime that Disability Rights UK have designed into a series of graphs.

    A General Election is taking place on Thursday 12 December 2019 and it is very important that the voices of disabled people are heard.If you have received a poll card at your address, then you are currently registered and can vote in the upcoming election stated on the poll card but if not you need to make sure you are registered to vote by midnight on Tuesday 26th November.

    For more than 8 years disabled people in the UK have been hit by cuts in vital services, cuts in income and changes to the benefit system which are cruel and harmful.     Every year Shaw Trust publish their Power 100 list, a celebration of the 100 most influential and inspirational disabled people in Britain. Shaw Trust’s work with the power 100 list aims to change perceptions of disability, tackle social exclusion and provide role models for the young and talented leaders of tomorrow.The honour of Britain’s most influential disabled person of 2018 goes to TV presenter Alex Brooker (pictured.)

  • Disability Hub Meeting

    The next meeting of the Disability Hub is this coming Wednesday 27 September 2017. The meeting runs this time in the morning from 10.30 am until 1 pm, Ground Floor Conference Rooms, The Circle, Rockingham Lane. It will be an important meeting for the Disability Hub and hopefully you can come and join in with the discussions.

  • Change Needed in Media Portrayal of Disabled People

    Calls are being made for change as disabled people say they don’t feel they are well represented in either broadcast or printed media. Essentialaids.com have created a colourful, thought-provoking campaign that helps represent disabled people and their mobility products in a fresh, exciting way. The campaign is hopefully helping to get others to rethink how disabled people are portrayed – or sometimes just being plain ignored.

  • Access Event

    Sheffield Theatres’ are holding an Access Event on Tuesday 27 June from 3.30pm until 5.00pm at the Crucible Theatre.

    Sheffield Theatres event for individuals and groups who use Audio Description, Captioning or Sign Language services to get to know the venues at Sheffield Theatres. They will be holding familiarisation tours in the Lyceum and Crucible accompanied by Audio Describers, BSL Interpreters and live captioning.

When I moved to Sheffield nearly five years ago it was my "go to" organisation. I expect it to stay that way. All the staff and volunteers seem to pull out little gems of effort that disabled people like me couldn't do without. Professionally and personally - I love em :)
